Cruelty is a device often used in great literature to portray a era in history critically. In Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" he uses cruelty in that way. Through his descriptions of African treatment, Conrad reveals that all humans are evil.
Throughout "Heart of Darkness", Conrad shows how Europeans treat Africans inhumanely. Towards the end of part one, the Company's workers are beating Africans for no reason. This shows that the Company's success is a facade to mask European primitiveness. It also shows how Africans have no defense are helpless to the situation of imperialism. By the same token, similarities between what Africas are perceived to be and the English are shown through the attack on the ship. For example, the Company's men put heads of Africans on sticks. This indicates Europeans could care less about African's lives and that they only care about exuding power over them to gain profit, regardless of lives lost to get there. Explicity there is manipulation of Africans with Kurtz brainwashing them. This shows a sheer disrespect and lack of recognition of any form of life Africans have. Their religon, which is essential to their life, is used to advance Kurtz's power, as if it doesn't matter. Europeans do not find it evil to disrespect a culture which further reveals their darkness .
