When the play ‘The Crucible’ first opens up, John Proctor is shown as a man of great
importance who has committed a shameful act. His affair makes his personality weaker than he
once. You can feel the guilt through the book filled in his heart. The author describes Proctor as a
“respected” man who was “powerful of body” and even “feared” by some (Reverend Parris) in
Salem. He still seems to be fighting off urges for Abigail. Almost as if he is not completely over
her. He shows a sign of overcoming his weakness during his confrontation with Abigail behind
the barn. From everything you know about Proctor in the beginning, he was defiantly not my
favorite character.
