How Does Identity Affect A Student's Identity?

Identity is directly related to self-identification which also affects how an individual’s moral basis and ethics; how a student defines his/her own identity will greatly determine how they choose to act in school. This is much influenced by the culture that the individuals are brought up and the experience that they have experienced. Continuing from the topic of tracking, many students in KCCHS has previously been placed in lower tracking programs, which did not provide necessary foundation in knowledge and skill for them to handle regular high school materials. Students often feel very frustrated as they face standardized test where they are clearly at a disadvantage, and it negatively impacts the way they look at education. Since students find little success in school, it is very rare that they would develop a close relationship with the process of learning. “For many urban teens living in poor and working-class communities, concern over prematurely committing to a working role in society is largely irrelevant” (Nakkula 11). The school actively monitors the performance of students and set up meets to those who are under-performing or who feels they need extra support from the school not matter if it is a personal issue or an academic difficulty. Such one-to-one sessions helps students re-identify their role as a student in school and explains how education would open doors of opportunities for their future if they are willing to put the effort to do so. “Through relationship with their mentors, many such youth come to experience education as relevant to who they are and who they are and who they hope to become, often for the first time.” (Nakkula 13).
