How Does Human Activities Affect Wildfires?

Improved Essays
Did you know that in 2016, 81.6% of CO2 emissions were from human activities? These large amounts of carbon emitted are used to do many things, but most of them are bad. The one I will be talking about is wildfires since it is impacted by climate change in a huge way. Wildfires are large, destructive fires that are started then spread fast over trees and brush. Three ways wildfires are affected by humans are: burning fossil fuels, leaving campfires unattended, and leaving cigarettes lit. In this CER, I will support the claim that burning fossil fuels best demonstrates the effect increased CO2 from human activities are having on wildfires.
There is lots of evidence for humans doing these things to affect wildfires. Referring back to paragraph

Of all the Wildfire scientists, Dr. Hall pays it the least amount of attention. He agreed to join the team in 1966 when approached by Leavitt, but did not follow the updates he was given and doubted anything would ever come of the project. His inattention to the details annoyed Leavitt, and Stone felt that Hall's surgical abilities would be of little if any help at the facility. In actuality, Hall had not been Stone's first choice, but was brought on in a compromise with army officials. He was the last person notified of the incident at Piedmont and the least well informed about the Flatrock installation.…

There are some legendary forest fires that have been documented all the way back to the late 1800s. The most notable fire in that century was the Peshtigo Fire of 1871. After these fires, there were two main conservationists, Franklin Hough and Bernard Fernow, which pushed for protecting timber supplies and watersheds. The federal government then established the US Forest Service in 1905. The Forest Service was given control over the national forests.…

Together, the Thomas fire in Ventura county and the Creek fire in Los Angeles county damaged or destroyed at least 1,547 homes and injured at least 4 firefighters. Richard Halsey uses the Los Angeles Times’ platform to get his opinion of the fires’ source across to California residents. He first points out some of the causes people are pointing to.…

While wildfires have been around since the beginning of time, our encroachment into forested areas and dry locations such as southern California requires mitigation to reduce loss of lives and property damage. The most impactful thing I see the communities and individual owners do is vegetation management. There are multiple ways to fight overgrowth of vegetation; prescribed burning, chemical treatments, and mechanical treatments (San Diego County Wildland Fire Task Force Findings and Recommendations, 2003).…

In earlier years we were using about forty percent of the groundwater, but now during the drought years we are using sixty percent of the water. Additionally, the drought and higher temperatures cause the land to become dryer which increase the chance of a natural disaster. As a result of dryer land wildfires are becoming more common. The heat and the drought create a perfect condition for wildfires. There have been a thirty-six percent increase in wildfires in 5 years.…

One very convincing point in favour of influence that climate change to bushfires is that climate change triggers the Forest Fire Danger Index(FFDI)(1.book; Luke and Arthur 1978). In 1967 Alan MacArthur , Climatologist developed the FFDI which is varies from 1 to 100 and it is subtle to wind speed, relative humidity and temperature changes(2.book : Dowdy et al. 2009). It is a fact that increase of temperature and dryness contribute to the upward trend of FFDI. On the basis of State of climate – 2016, by the CISRO and Bureau of Meteorology, daily FFDI point has increased since 1974 across Australia, especially in Southern and Eastern Australia, and each time the fire season has lengthened considerably.…

    California Wildfires Essay

Wildfires can destroy wildlife habitat causing habitat fragmentation, diminishing timber and forestry health, polluting the air with carbon dioxide, dramatically altering watersheds, negatively effecting soil chemistry, and requiring large amounts of water during a drought to combat the fires. Habitat loss is the worldwide leading cause of loss of biodiversity, a metric used to describe species richness in a given area. More frequently, habitats in California are being degraded as the intensity of fires is changing, burning hotter than previous fires in the same area (Keely, 2009). For example, if a fire burns half a forest down not only is there half the original available space for all the organisms that previous lived in the entirety of the forest, but the half that was burned down now also takes longer to recover as…

Add a Title According to the SREX report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a changing climate leads to changes in the frequency, intensity, spatial extent, duration, and timing of extreme weather and climate events, and can result in unprecedented extreme weather and climate events (IPCC, 2012). Especially in the Western United States, wildfires are increasing in frequency, duration, and severity. Wildfires are a major source of particulate matter in the air, mainly during the summertime. This particulate matter can increase the risk of lung cancer, cardiovascular disease and the development of asthma. Soil erosion and runoff caused by wildfires can contaminate water supplies and lead to a decrease in the availability of safe,…
