How Does Homer Use Camera Angles In The Odyssey

Improved Essays
This scene contains, Homer waking up, getting ready, and travelling down the elevator.
Characters
Homer is the only character shown throughout the scene, and shows how upset and reluctant to work in the mine. He was so unfocused and dreading what would come, that another miner had to say “turn your light on boy”. Recognizing that, in many people’s eyes, he is still just a boy, and shouldn’t necessarily be working in the mine. It also shows that Homer is obviously unsure about what he’s supposed to be doing and that he doesn’t belong in the mine.
Camera Angles
The scene uses several different film techniques over the period of when Homer wakes up, to when he descends into the mine. Starting off as Homer is walking over to get his hat, the camera is at a mid-shot, showing his waist down and stays at that height as he walks. However changes, when Homer is both entering and in the elevator. It becomes dark, and gloomy representing what Homer’s feeling.
Music
The music is repetitive and is a mix of slow violin and other instruments to create a mote emotive scene. It starts of quite soft and gets louder as Homer gets closer to the mine.
Themes
There is one major theme portrayed in this scene. It is really space travel in reverse, the elevator clanks, carrying them far beneath the earth surface and the other miners could, in some peoples eye, be seen as explores, investigating an alien world. Whereas if it was space travel, they would all be carried upwards.
This segment shows the audience, Homers feelings, towards both going down to the mine, and him questioning himself, on whether or not he is doing the right thing. It shows that no matter what, Homer will always long to travel through
