Life of Depression
“I was feeling so depressed I didn’t even think. When you’re feeling depressed, you cant even think”. (J.D Salinger ). J.D Salinger, born in Manhattan, New York in 1919. Salinger was sent to Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania, after flunking out of his high school that he attended. Salinger returned home for a year ,after graduating Valley Forge, to go to New York University. Salinger met a professor ,Whit Burnett, that ignited his interest in being an author. Salinger career was called to a halt after he was drafted into the army during World War II, where he served from 1942 to 1944. Salinger continued to write, coming up with chapters for his new novel, Catcher in the Rye. (Biography.com Editors). J.D. Salinger described parts of his social issues with depression through his books. In “Catcher in the Rye” Salinger writes about a young teenager named Holden Caulfield who deals with depression throughout the story. Holden has had a rough childhood, flunking out of 4 high schools, and on the verge on getting expelled at his current high school. Holden is currently failing 4 out of the 5 classes that he is taking before Christmas break. Holden then gets into a scuffle with his roommate over a girl that his used to go out with. Holden fed up with his current situation at his school, leaves three days early for Christmas break to go back to his hometown, Manhattan.
