Innocence, Death and Communication
Growing up is strenuous and similar to Holden, people often have the desire to stay youthful eternally. Getting older can change someone from being pure to sinful. Holden repeatedly expresses that he yearns for people to preserve their innocence. He stated, “Certain things they should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and just leave them alone.” (pg. 122) Holden is captivated by the museum because every time he returns, the displays are the same. Holden, at a very young age, unfortunately had to experience the pain of losing a close family member. When asked who he admired Holden responded by saying Allie, his deceased brother. In response Phoebe replied and told Holden that Allie is dead. He retorted, “Just because somebody's dead, you don't just stop liking them, for God’s sake…” (pg. 171) Although a significant amount of time has passed since his brother's death, it continues to be a sensitive topic for Holden. No matter how recent the demise occurred it will constantly be a sore subject. “I slept in the garage the night he died and I broke all the goddamn windows with my fist, just for the hell of it.” (pg.39) Evidently, the death of Allie affected Holden even more than he cares to admit. His brother was his closest friend and was the one person that Holden was able to express his emotions to. When he died Holden was lonely and lost his ambition to succeed. The death of a family member alters your viewpoint and Holden decided that compared to what he experienced his schoolwork is insignificant. This is the cause of his constant movement from school to school. After Holden was pulverized by Maurice he said, “I started talking, sort of out loud, to Allie. I do that sometimes when I get depressed.” (pg. 98) To Holden, Allie is the person he can always rely on. Allie is there to listen and support Holden when he feels abandoned. Allie’s death greatly affected Holden. Not only did it reduce his motivation but also it caused Holden to isolate
