Catherine, an undisciplined little girl is now a sophisticated young lady. We must acknowledge that this is the first situation in which Catherine and Heathcliff start to understand that there are divisions within social classes. Catherine, now being greatly influenced by the Lintons, acts just like the Lintons would as wealthy people would. In Heathcliff’s first encounter with Catherine, he immediately notices a difference with Catherine as she is now more sophisticated. Catherine embraced Heathcliff and then commented,”Why, how very black and cross you look! And how funny and grim! But that is because i’m used to Edgar, and Isabella Linton.”. As soon as she said that, Heathcliff had a high tempered reaction in which he responded that he will remain as is and that he doesn’t care what others think about him. Heathcliff now realizes that his childhood friend, Catherine, has now changed and isn’t the same. Furthermore, this is the event that separated the two characters and somewhat foreshadows what will occur later on throughout the novel.
This chapter from the novel contributes greatly to one of the main plots in the book. We now know that Catherine and Heathcliff are in two separate social classes at this point.
