My current area units include three patrol boats, a station and a maintenance detachment unit. Currently we have a total of ten chiefs that have never come together as a mess in my two years that I have been there. Seven of the ten chief’s have no real experience of working in a mess. The other three I feel in my opinion that they don’t care. I have seen it first hand the struggle and the stress it creates to the command chiefs, engineering petty officer chiefs and shop chiefs. I’ve seen the chief buried in his own work environment that he/she makes no time for his crew. The chief gives short answers with no meaning and hands out stacks of work with no “why?” Nobody wants to work with the chief and the motivation of the crew is low. This also creates a stressful environment on the crew and they have no self purpose and do the bare minimum. Working in this type of environment not only affects the ships’ crew, it affects the outside units that come aboard. They see the low motivation, stress of the crew and the lack of work performed. This affects them too, and they feel why they are the only ones working on the ship while the crew is doing nothing. The negativity and low motivations affects
