Racism is one of the worst things in this society, and Haper lee shows us the way of life in the south of America in the 1930s in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. This story is from the point of view of Scout Finch who is the Child of Atticus who is a lawyer defending a black man, Tom Robinson who is being accused of raping a white girl. Even though he is white, he’s defending a hopeless black man in a racisit biased trial. Atticus wants Justice to be served correctly but he knows that this case is cleary over since it began due to Tom’s situation and appearance. But that doesn’t stop him from defending him. Instead of Atticus defending Tom Robinson as a black man, he defends him as his innocences. “Which, gentlemen, we know is in itslef a lie as black as Tom Robinson’s skin, a lie I do not have to point out to you. You know the truth, and the truth is this: some Negroes lie ; Negro men are not to be trusted around women – black or white. But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particuar race of me.” (Lee 273). Atticus is correct that we should judge baded on individuals rather than the color of our skin. He even had hope when the jury took hours to decide a verdict but racism broke the justice system and broke a innocent man’s life
