How Does Hamlet Relate To Today

The play Hamlet was written by Shakespeare many years ago. It is a story about a teenager whose father was murdered by his uncle. The uncle then married Hamlet’s mother and this upsets Hamlet greatly. Since this play is a tragedy, there is also a lot of death in it. However, even though the play is very old, there are themes throughout the play that still relate with today’s society. Hamlet is a hypocrite throughout a lot of play and he is a deceitful liar. Hamlet, like many of us today, does have an extremely dysfunctional family. So although this play is very old, it has many different ideas that can still be found in today’s society. Throughout the entire play, Hamlet is seen lying and sneaking around. He gets upset when his father is killed by his uncle, but then proceeds to try and kill his uncle. Hamlet was always saying that he was sickened by how family could kill one another, yet he turned around and ended up killing more people (some by accident) than anyone else. The queen would try to talk to Hamlet and say that no one was listening, when really Polonius was behind a curtain listening to every word they were saying. Hamlet also lied when he intercepted the letter and changed his name to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to make those two be killed instead of himself. Lying is still seen very prominently throughout everyday life in today’s society. Lying or the twisting of the truth seems to be extremely prevalent, especially with this being a presidential election year in the United States. It has become so commonplace to see politicians say almost anything they want to about their opponent, either to get a reaction from the crowds they are speaking to or to disgrace them on national television. Even if confronted with their lies, it is not unheard of to see the candidate who told the lies, either shrug or laugh off what he or she said, and move on to another
