How Does Hamlet Reflect The Character Of The Original Play

Improved Essays
In Hamlet, Shakespeare utilizes a play within a play about “The Murder of Gonzago.” It was essentially a ploy to make Claudius guilty of the murderous deed he committed on King Hamlet. While it does act as a way to portray the characters of the initial play in a different light, acting as creators and actors, it demonstrates a way to reflect the plot and characters of the original play.
In Act III Scene 2, Hamlet acts as a director for a play called “Murder of Gonzago,” or Mousetrap. In the story, the Queen leaves the King to sleep, and when she returns, she finds him dead. The person who killed the King proceeds to woo the Queen with gifts, eventually accepting the love. “Make us again count o’er ere love be done!/But, woe is me, you are

    Hamlet's Central Idea

In Hamlet by Shakespeare, Hamlet's act three scene one soliloquy develops a central idea. That central idea is that thought causes one to be fearful of solving an issue. This is shown when Hamlet says "The undiscovered country, from whose bourn no traveler returns, puzzles the will, and makes [one] rather bear those ills [one has] than fly to others that [they] know not of" (Shakespeare 79-82). By this he means that instead of doing something one doesn't know about, one would rather suffer where they are. Therefore, the central idea is that fearful thoughts causes one to not go to the unknown and solve a…

I disliked the fact that Hamlet over thought every little thing and was unable to kill Claudius when the many opportunities he was given arose. But when it came to killing Polonius, and sending Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to their deaths, after finding his own letter ordering his death, that was easy and he acted on impulse. Which is what made me question Hamlet’s sanity. Was Hamlet enjoying acting insane and subconsciously did not want it to end therefore not really wanting to kill the king? When Hamlet was in the graveyard and met the grave digger who had no sympathy for the dead which offended Hamlet, I agreed with Hamlet.…

No matter what time and era an individual is in, society has always created a set of rules, norms and values, in which every individual must follow and portray, that will define who they are. Due to that oppression, humans created duo personalities: who they are (which they hide) versus their false identification (what society accepted), to cope with the social ideals. William Shakespeare, known for his universal themes, demonstrates the dual personalities through prince Hamlet. Therefore, by consistently incorporating oxymoron 's in his speeches, Hamlet demonstrates that he lacks an emotional centre, through the use of his shadow self and his persona.…

The story of Hamlet mostly takes place in Elsinore, Denmark during the late middle ages. However, it also has aspects of Shakespeare’s time, the 16th century, scattered throughout the play. During both the 15th and 16th centuries, public image played a crucial role in every noble’s life. How society viewed a noble was just as important as a noble’s honor. Hamlet, the main character of the play, grows in that society, but he fights against the pressure to maintain a positive public view.…

Similar to Shakespeare’s other stories, Hamlet is a very formulaic story with several character archetypes and the common theme of hamartia continues to be used today in many current forms of fictional writing. Specifically, crucial characters within Hamlet such as Claudius, Hamlet and Polonius have varying character archetypes and as a result each character has a different set of goals and ethical boundaries. Hamlet 's indecision and continuous delay of Claudius 's murder until the end is explained through several concepts of psychology, delving into his innermost thoughts which act as the driving forces behind his behavior, actions, and attitude towards other characters. From a psychological perspective, Hamlet’s lack of action towards his intended goal is not surprising, especially from a person who shows many symptoms of major depressive disorder including inactivity, thoughts of suicide, frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, agitation, anxiety, and hopelessness. Despite being dead set on getting revenge for his father after he met 'his ghost ' in act 1 scene 4, Hamlet soon began contemplating suicide in his ‘to be or not to be’ soliloquy…
