“ To be, or not to be. That is the question”, this is one of the most Iconic Shakespearean quotes of all time. It is Hamlet himself referring to his desire to die. He wants to kill himself because of the corruption he lives under. His father has been killed by his uncle the new king. As if that isn't enough, his mother then re-married to his uncle. Now everyone thinks he is mad. So Hamlet is contemplating suicide. Depression, low self esteem, and suicide is still a very prevalent problem today. Suicide is more common today than it has ever been. Suicide is the second leading cause of death of people between the ages of 10-24 (“Youth Suicide Statistics”) and is the tenth leading cause of death overall in the U.S. (“Suicide Statistics”). This shows that there are a huge amount of deaths in the United States, specifically in young people, every year. Hamlet is suffering from a number of reasons to commit suicide. He is depressed from the death of his father and feels as if he cannot escape the situation. …show more content…
These reasons range from depression to feeling bad about a mistake they have made. The main reason is depression. People who commit suicide from depression often are not just sad. They usually feel as if they are in a hopeless situation that they cannot escape from except for through death (Lickermen). Hamlet is clearly in this situation as well. He is severely depressed by the death of his father and the marriage between his mother and his uncle. Then he finds out that his father was murdered and that he must get revenge. As he thinks more about this he begins to realize the he is in a hopeless situation. He knows his uncle is trying to kill him and begins to think that it may be best to commit
