How Does Goya Celebrate The Spanish's Resistance Against Napolt?

Decent Essays
The purpose of this painting is to commemorate the Spanish’s resistance against Napoleon during his occupation of Spain in 1808. This painting is also used as a political protest against the Bonapartist government. I like the fact that Goya made a reference to Jesus Christ in his painting. I also like the fact that Goya is trying to enlighten the viewers to the atrocities that a tyrannical government could commit if it comes to power. My only criticism of the painting is its lack of inclusion of women and children. I feel that the painting would have a more emotional impact if Goya had included women and children in his painting. I would include kneeling and praying women and weeping children in the

The work that I am analyzing is Bathsheba After the Bath by Jan Steen (1626-1679). I believe the meaning of the painting shows exactly what women had to endure to be presented to a man of high royalty and had no rights in the matter to reject his advances. The gloomy colors in the painting correlates with the emotion that Bathsheba expresses. Examining the painting I found interesting props surrounding Bathsheba and the maidservants. The painting tells the story of how King David sent for Bathsheba.…

Failing Spain The third and final reason why Coronado was evidently villainous is that, although he was adventurous and discovered many natural wonders, his expedition failed to do what it had been meant for, thus failing Spain. People may argue that Coronado, despite his flaws, was actually a great person who’s legacy was to be remembered, as he discovered many prominent features what is now the southwestern United States. Some such aspects were pueblos, buffalo herds, the Colorado Plateau, and the Grand Canyon. These discoveries paved the way for the founding of settlements like Santa Fe, New Mexico (“Francisco Vasquez de Coronado | PBS World Explorers” 3:58 - 4:29). This means that, according to some, even though Coronado may have done…

Or more specifically, what he represents. The title liberation of the peon literally means freeing the poor and that's exactly what's depicted in the mural. While a “Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park” conveys the same message but tries to hide it among the midst of what looks to be a huge party. The Cientificos on the left side of the painting and what looks to be the rebels and the lower class of the right with conflict in the middle between what looks to be what could represent the army or the police and what looks like revolutionaries like Zapata and or Pancho Villa. “Liberation of the Peon” depicts a very bleak/ depressing day with its use of bland browns greys and yellows aside from the red of the blanket which to me symbolizes freedom that's both shown around the necks of the people freeing the peon and the blanket that they appear to be…

The Spanish Armada Philip II of Spain was given the keys to success by his father Charles V. Philip was left with vast economic resources coming in by the boatload from Spanish colonies in the new world, the strongest state in Europe at the time and the state on the verge of achieving a Spanish hegemony. Yet Philip II still managed to fail even with all these major advantages over other states. One major defining factor in his failure to achieve a Spanish Hegemony was the defeat of the Spanish Armada at the English canal. Philip II was determined to get rid of Elizabeth I of England to make the nation once again safe for Catholicism (Parker, The Repulse of the English Fireships).…

Francisco Goya was a Spanish romantic painter. He was known for his disruptive work and royal paintings. Goya had influenced Romantics of the early 1800s, with his skill of capturing dramatic moments and using his fantastic imagination (Stokstad 1). Goya’s paintings went from lighthearted and jolly to deeply pessimistic (Vorrhies 1).…

Now I have decided that I would like to talk about the movie: The Last Supper. Directed by Tomas Gutierrez Alea, this film talks about different topics. For example; slavery, history and art.…

I believe the image is a function of just pure homage. I consider that the artist, Chagoya, wanted his audience to see the life of this mysterious man named, José Clemente Orozco. I suppose that this could also be intentional by the artist. Just viewing the artwork, I can’t seem to think of any other function than just an homage and to reveal the life of Orozco.…

My cultural artifact is a painting made by my uncle here at Fresno State over 20 years ago. Since I was a little girl I’ve always loved my uncles paintings but this one has just always been a little more special to me. Before this assignment I had never known or asked him his inspiration behind the painting or it’s meaning, but it never stopped me from having my own meaning for it. To me this painting represented my very young grandma in Colima Mexico, cooking, hand made tortillas for her family, making sure they know they’re always being taken care of.…

Art throughout history has always helped facilitate and distribute thoughts and ideas on current events, especially on war. The 1937 painting, “Guernica”, was a large mural painted by Picasso, a well-known artist during this time. The painting’s depiction of bodies and animals screaming and writhing in agony is thought to be a visual message responding to the destruction and bombing of a village located in Guernica, Spain, which happened around the time the painting was released. Furthermore, the widespread attention that Picasso received for this work helped bring attention to the Spanish Civil War. The use of black and white emphasizes the harshness of the scene and the sharp lines and disjointed limbs suggest pain and terror.…

In 1519, Spanish explorers, under the leadership of Hernán Cortés, set foot on what is now modern-day Mexico in search of gold and land in the Aztec Empire. Although the Spanish initially had no intentions (or orders from Cuban governor Diego Velásquez for whom they made the voyage) to colonize the Aztec Empire, they sought to communicate with the inhabitants and spread their Christian faith. However, the end of 1521 saw the mighty Aztec Empire practically cease to exist, its emperor Montezuma II join the many victims of the conquest, and the survivors put under the rule of the Spanish. A variety of factors came into play regarding the Spanish’s ability to conquer this mighty empire, including the ability to communicate verbally, the religious beliefs of both peoples, and the devastating effect of disease on the Aztec empire.…

Here, Goya immortalizes and glorifies the martyred peasants of the May third massacre, who never gave up or stopped fighting. This glorification and martyrdom is prominent due to the christlike imagery of the center figure, who is dressed in white and poses as if he were nailed to a cross. The emotions on the faces of the peasants also brings an essential sense of humanity to the Spanish within the painting. David uses his painting to inspire patriotism for France, while Goya uses his to vilify France for their brutality. The same position can create vastly different meanings, as David uses it to show strength, while Goya uses it to show cowardice and…
