In The Crucible, there are many roles played by characters to help progress and/or diminish the happening of the Witch Trials. While most of the main characters had an obvious development and overarching story, one was more oblivious. Although he had his own evolution throughout the play, Giles Corey had another major role that may have gone unnoticed. Giles Corey plays the role of the unsung hero of the Salem Witch Trials. His character progression takes him from being the foolish old man to the old man who dies honorably for his family.
Giles is an old man who is strong, canny, inquisitive, and still powerful. However, he is a little hot-tempered and not too bright. Giles does not have a good reputation however, and usually gets blamed for things that go wrong. While trying to argue in court, Giles claims that Putnam is just trying to get more land and says that he has proof to back this assertion up. Giles allegedly says that Putnam had his daughter accuse George Jacobs. If Jacobs is hung for witchery, his land will go up for sale, and Putnam is the only person who is rich enough to buy the land. To sum it up, Giles claims that Putnam is killing his neighbors for their land. Giles continues on to say that an honest man told Giles that he had overheard the conversation between Putnam and his daughter. When asked for the man’s name, Giles refuses. “I will give you no name. I mentioned my wife’s name once and I’ll burn in hell long enough for that. I stand mute”(90).
