George was the one who watched over lennie so he felt that it was his decision on whether he should kill him or not. Although George loved Lennie, he had to kill him because the mob wanted to get him lynched, the police would have put him in jail, and if George let Lennie run off he would starve that is why i think George did the right thing. After Lennie killed Curley's wife, the other guys had their mind set on killing Lennie for what he had done, but George decided he should do it himself so it wouldn't hurt him as bad as knowing that he let other people do barely know Lennie, do it.
