How Does George Kill Lennie's Death

“[George] pulled the trigger. The crash of the shot rolled up the hills and rolled down again” (Steinbeck 106). George shoots his friend Lennie to save him from a life of suffering. George and Lennie are two merchant workers who travel together from Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Lennie has a mental disability which leaves him with memory loss and a lack of control over his actions. At the end of the book, Lennie kills Curley’s wife accidentally after she found him alone and let him touch her hair. Curley, the boss’s son, is possessive over her and he is livid. He does not like Lennie, so this was the perfect opportunity to hurt him in an unthinkable way. Lennie ran away trying to escape the hardships that he knew he would face. Curley along with rancher workers were searching for him ready to kill him and showing no mercy. George knows that he and Lennie would have to move on to the next ranch and continue the endless cycle that they have been going through for years that leads to nothing worth trying for. George finds Lennie and shoots him dead, knowing that if he does not do it some one else would, but he would not let anyone put Lennie through so much pain and suffering. George killing Lennie is a mercy killing to keep him from suffering and living a miserable life.

Gigi Jordan did the same by killing her son “to spare him from abuse at the hands of almost half a dozen people” (Rosenberg). Her son was diagnosed with autism at a young age and had been abused by his father, babysitters, and several others. Lennie is going to be killed even if George does not kill him. The purpose of a mercy killing is to save the person from suffering and that is what George is doing. Lennie could be beaten or killed in an extremely painful and excruciating
