How Does Gabriel Change Over Time

In the Dead by, James Joyce, the main character, Gabriel reveals how life changes over time, but it is all a matter of perspective. The way he explained this to us was by using techniques and devices such as time, imagery, and symbolism. First of all, Gabriel utilizes techniques such as symbolism when he uses phrases such as, “as he got curious eyes,” to demonstrate that his eyes are wandering around the room seeing with great detail what he is so upset about. Gabriel also mentions “her first girlish beauty” when he was referring to how beautiful her wife used to be. Additionally, he uses the phrase “yes, yes that will happen very soon” hoping for a better future. So, Gabriel uses symbolism to describe how his wife used to be pretty, how life will end soon, and how he is very observant over everything. Gabriel uses time in the story in many occasions. Gaybriel uses the phrase “he had caught that haggard look.” Also, if he uses “the blind will be drawn”, and finally he used “had played in her life.” All of the frases listed above, are used with a past tone which indicates that the reader is obsessed with the past. It doesn't matter if people are talking about other people, about feelings, or simply comments about someone's physical appearance. Some of the quotes Gabriel mentioned in the story are "one boot stood upright" “deep drawn breath," "crying and blowing her nose”, "Her first girlish beauty”, and “his own foolish speech.” Gaybrook utilizes this kind of language or us readers to have an idea for us to be easier to identify the mood of the story.
