In literature, the contemporary movement took place during the 20th century when society was under the impression that God did not exist due to the evil all around them. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem said, “The dragon is by the side of the road, watching those who pass. Beware lest he devour you. We go to the father of souls, but it is necessary to pass by the dragon” This quote influenced catholic author, Flannery O’Connor to portray this message in her witty and frighteningly real works of literature. O’Connor uses her short stories, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, “A Late Encounter with the Enemy”, and “The Displaced Person,” to illustrate the temptation and sin that was devouring and keeping society from the realization of the existence of God.
One of the main characters, Grandma, in short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, is selfish and full of pride with herself and her son. The grandma endangers the whole family when she brings her cat on vacation after being told not to. Besides causing the family to get into a car accident due to her cat, grandma led the family away from their vacation in Florida by lying to them so that she could go on vacation to her desired …show more content…
Throughout the composition, General Sash believes he is stunningly handsome and one example of this is his choosing not to wear teeth, as he believes the ladies find him more attractive without them. The General agrees to sit on stage for his granddaughter’s graduation so that his dashing good looks can be admired by everyone at once for an extended period of time. The assumptions that feed the vanity of the general are false however, and he dies on stage without being noticed by anyone.
