School requires constant thought and attention to solve complex problems and achieve convoluted tasks. This ensues the need for increased brain activity. However, this is absent if students to not receive enough sleep (Teixeira). With sleep deprivation, comes the inability to think and process information …show more content…
In a survey conducted of 1990-2009 by experts, school is becoming increasingly more demanding. From 1990-2009 school requires 3.6 more credits than from the original 23.6 to the now withstanding 27.2. In addition, classes are also becoming more relentless. In 1990, only 5% of students were taking “rigorous” classes. In 2009, this number nearly tripled to 13%. “Midlevel” courses have virtually doubled from 26% to 41%. In 1990, 9% of students were taking “standard courses”, like “rigorous” courses, this number has nearly tripled to 17%. Since every area of classes has experienced an increase, one area has to decrease. This area is the “below standard” classes. Although it was the majority in 1990 with 60%, it has dramatically dropped nearly half to 32% (Rogers). As school difficulty increases, less sleep occurs than the adequate amount of nine hours since a clear connection is present. Ergo either school start times need to become later or school needs to become less difficult to accommodate for the …show more content…
Compared to adults, adolescents have a sleep pattern of staying up and sleeping in later. This is simply natural. However, adults have the tendency of going to sleep and getting up earlier than teens (Hansen). Naturally adults and teens have different sleeping patterns. Since schools are created and maintained by adults, the timing has been created to benefit them, despite being an institution for adolescents. Meanwhile, this irony great harms teens.
To help combat the problems of teen suicide, depression, crash rates, rebelliousness, inattentiveness, cigarette smoking, inefficient teaching, and general health, school start times should be made later. Later school start times would then help diminish these problems. The result being healthier and safer teenagers. They only expense of this change would be less comfortableness of adults. A price that would not even be analogous to severe. Ergo with scarcely an expenditure, and a mass quantity of acquisitions for teenagers and all others, school start times should be made
