As television has moved through time the shows have moved with the ideals of the people that are watching, sometimes even pushing for change in the thinking of people in society. One example of tv changing through time is how family has been viewed in different shows. Now everyone's view of family is different, so how can you define family “a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not” (Dictionary.com). There are now just a few things left to determine has it changed through time, what impact did it make and was it worth pushing the boundaries.
The view of family on tv has changed a lot through time the first families on tv were almost all white and consisted of a set of parents (male and female) and one to two kids for example The Dick Van Dyke show this show is a prime example of “a subordinate group … the socially dominant position of a white heterosexual male figure.” (Mittel 306). Plus, they will go down in history as some of the best pioneers in television history. Then comes Modern family in their first season they reached “a 3.8 rating in their key demographic with each point translating to 1.3 million viewers” (Thompson and Mittel, 254) Also, they are on season 8 with ratings by 3 top sites at 8-9 out of 10.
