In this discussion, I will first define ethnicity and the influence it has on Human Services. Secondly, I will explain how ethnicity may influence human services practice in my area of study.
Ethnicity
Ethnicity can be defined many different ways mean one simple thing. People who share nationality and culture traditions. Common bases for ethnicity is religion and language. Often, individual of different ethnicity than “White American” find themselves making adjustments to compete in a dominated society (Reid& Schram, 2012).
Ethnicity plays a large role in Human Services in very different ways. In the article, Racial/ethnic differences in religious congregation-based social services delivery efforts, it explains that black churches tend to have more “people helping people” resources avaaible to the congregation and in some case the community. In my experience this is a true statement. Prior to my current role I spent more than 18 years in direct services and often had to call on churches to assist families with rental payments, emergency housing, food, and clothing. I often find myself the only minority in the room or at the decision making table. I am leaving a place where I was the majority and could friendly discuss my culture and beliefs without feeling as though I would be judged. This is my personal example of culture-cross interaction that I experience daily (Reid & Schram, 2012). I have often asked myself if I was a status quo. In this environment we could use dark skin and younger souls to relate more to the families we serve. However, the culture of my agency is aware of the lack of diversity and seems to be taking smaller steps to move toward that
