People died daily, they worked themselves to death or were thrown into the crematoria. For Elie death was at first his worst fear ,him and/or his father dieing. Not long after he hurt his foot did death become a fascination. After his surgery the SS officers decided it was time to move camps, on his hurt foot he ran for miles. While he was running he said ¨The idea of dying, ceasing to be, began to fascinate me. To no longer exist. To no longer feel the excruciating pain of my foot. To no longer feel anything, neither fatigue nor cold, nothing,¨(Page 86). All, that kept him from giving up was his father, however his father was in the same position he was, ready to give up. It was not only the way that he felt of his own death that changed but also towards others, including his father. Deep down he sort of wanted his father to die but he would never admit it. Others told him to take his father's rations of bread and soup because there was nothing anyone could do for him. When his father did die he was sad but said, ¨I did not weep, and it pained me that I could not weep… I was out of tears… Deep inside me if i could have serch the recesses of my feeble conscience, I might have found something like: Free at last!¨ (Page 112).
