Title: The A Team
Text Type: Song lyrics
Composer: Ed Sheeran The song ‘The A Team’ by Ed Sheeran is a story about a girl who struggles with drugs and prostitution. This song is based on a real girl that Ed Sheeran met and how he saw the effects of Class A drugs. A strong message that I took from the song was this is a real issue in today’s society and drugs can ruin people's lives. This is shown in the verses when he describes her way of living. The lyrics “struggling to pay rent; long nights, strange men” and “ripped gloves, raincoat; tried to swim and stay afloat; dry house, wet clothes; loose change, bank notes; weary eyed, dry throat; call girl, no phone” show just how rough this girl's life was. And go mad for a couple grams, and she don't want to go outside tonight, and in a pipe she flies to the Motherland, or sells love to another man.” These lyrics describe the physical effects of the drugs but I think they also mirror how she is feeling on the inside. She feels like her life is slowly getting worse and she’s falling deeper into her depressive state. This is causing her to consume more drugs to make her feel good again. It also tells us of her unethical decision to go into prostitution. This is so sad because she felt as though it was the only way to feel good about herself and all she was worth. It was her escape and a distraction for all the problems she faced. She was desperate for money and with the society we live in, it’s seemed like a good, easy option. That fact that it is so easy for young girls to sell their bodies is morally wrong and disrespectful to women everywhere. Drugs are becoming more available on the streets and teenagers and young adults are an easy target. If people start doing drugs young, they will get addicted easier and a lot of them end up like the girl in the song. The society we live in encourages this to a certain degree, saying it’s ‘cool’ to do drugs and drink alcohol. So many people aren’t aware that some people actually do live like this because it isn’t a part of their life and doesn’t affect
