The Transformation of Dr. Jekyll In the Book The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Stevenson, Dr. Jekyll is trying to rationalize his behavior of transforming into Mr. Hyde. When Jekyll turns into Hyde he soon becomes evil. Mr. Hyde commits heinous crimes that Dr. Jekyll would never do, so in order to not feel guilty about the crimes that Hyde has committed. Dr. Jekyll convinces himself that it was not him doing these crimes, and that the only guilty person there is Mr. Hyde. This is shown when Stevenson wrote, "Henry Jekyll stood at times aghast before the acts of Edward Hyde; but the situation was apart from ordinary laws, and insidiously relaxed the grasp of conscience. It was Hyde, after all, and Hyde alone, that was guilty." (Stevenson 46). This shows that Dr. Jekyll is telling himself that he is not the one who is committing

Jekyll could have stopped himself from turning into Mr. Hyde, but he did not want to because Hyde make him feel alive again. Dr. Jekyll liked being him because Hyde was free, and could do what he wanted. While on the contrary Jekyll was an old man who had become bored with his life. At one point in time Jekyll had wanted to give up being Hyde, but he could not because his life was too plain. Lily Kreshaw had sung this in her song, As it Seems, "Well in this life you must find something to live for, cause when the darkness comes a callin' you'll go back to where you were before." This shows that because Dr. Jekyll was not satisfied with his simple life he went back to being Mr. Hyde, a man that was the definition of evil. He became so bored with his life that he was okay with transforming into a man with so much evil in his soul that he easily killed people. Instead of stopping himself, he kept on continuing to become someone the total opposite of him just to feel alive. In conclusion, Dr. Jekyll could have stopped becoming Mr. Hyde, but his boring life, and same routines made him continue to transform into Mr.
