Imagine you are dropped in a new land, unknown to you. You meet witches and a talking scarecrow, lion and tinman. That is what happened to humble Dorothy Gale from Kansas in The Wizard Of Oz by L. Frank Baum. In order to get home Dorothy needs to go on an adventure to emerald city. She is faced with hard challenges but proceeds to conquer those challenges. However, Dorothy was scared initially, she learns to face her fears throughout the story. Therefore, she is becoming more independent, she learns to do things herself because she is coming of age.
Dorothy does not start off confident in the novel. Dorothy’s independence and grit develops throughout the novel. For example, when there is a cyclone in kansas Dorothy is very scared and doesn't do anything to help herself. In the text it states “Dorothy got over her fright; but she felt quite lonely…” (4) This shows how Dorothy was lonely and couldn't try to support herself because she wasn't independent, she needed someone to help her. When Dorothy arrives in Oz she doesn't have any friends and feels scared, so she doesn't try to get home she just stands there frightened. She did this because she was reassured by Glinda the good witch, Glinda says “While you bear upon your forehead the mark of the good witch's kiss and that will protect you from harm.” (14) This shows Dorothy is still dependent on other people to help her. However, As Dorothy keeps along the yellow brick road she starts to gain confidence. Dorothy started her journey because she knew what she wanted, she realized that no one was going to go with her so she had to do it herself (16).
