How Does Diversity Affect Your Life In A Small Community

Improved Essays
I was born in the diverse southern city of Savannah, Georgia, but at a young age we moved to southwest Virginia. Being raised in a small town, I have been exposed to diversity on a smaller scale than larger ctties. My parents were raised all over the United States; therefore, their working, living and being social with many different cultrues has affected how I was raised. Their experiences has allowed me to be raised in a more diverse life than some others that have been raised in Wytheville, Virignia. Also, my work at a local theater and volunteering with youth has provided me experiences with many different individuals.

People travel great distances, sometimes forgetting about those they had known for so long. In his excerpt, Patetic argues that today’s transportation leads to poor relationships between family and friends. Patetic supports his argument by first stating that many family members no longer live within a close proximity to each other. He continues by explaining that people lose contact with each other when one moves away. Patetic’s argument is that people should remain within a decent proximity to each other in order to have a sense of community.…

How can belonging and participating within a diverse community aid in the development of your academic, social and career goals? I usually enjoy starting my papers of with my name Taylor Andrews, what I’m entering for, the battle royal for everything, and my level a EKU JR, and arrogantly but rightly deserves it. Then I would give a generic merriam-webster dictionary for diversity; the quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas, etc, and then give my view. You may not agree but still feel as if EKU has a large way to go compared to Rutgers University in NJ with a diversity. Diversity plus Eastern Kentucky University is supposed to equal melting pot, but I have not seen this diverse world clearly.…

Before moving to the city of Portsmouth, Virginia I grew up in the small country town of Lavaca, Arkansas. While some aspects of living in the city is consistent with living in the country, the city lifestyle offers more convenience, experiences, and opportunities. Growing up in a town with a population of around two thousand people means being a part of a tight knit community. I was surprised to find that same sense of community living in a town of over ninety-six thousand people. I have built friendly relationships with many of my neighbors and attended community events and gatherings in the same way I did living in the country.…

Will Allen’s The Good Food Revolution: Growing Healthy Food, and Communities, covers this rather nicely, he goes over everything from the importance of healthy lifestyles down to the fact that these life styles derive from a strong family backbone. Family isn’t necessarily being related by blood either; Allen’s story describes his employees as though they are family, and tries to emphasize this with personal notes and stories about them and their relationships. His groups’ goal is very clear; they want to produce and provide easy access to their community in order to make it seem even more like a family setting. A family setting is very nice because it allows everyone to feel like they have someone that truly cares about them. A family setting is truly the key to unlocking a thriving lifestyle when one has family they are near unstoppable.…

When Small Towns go big or go Organic There was a time when the town I lived in was a small society of farmers and factory workers. The town as a whole believed in hard work, good product, and solid kinship. This was a time when our social structure reflected the principles of mechanical solidarity and Gemeinschaft. The town began to transition around ten years ago as an urban area near us began to spread out and reach our borders. Today, we are still somewhere in the middle and reflect both social structures in different ways.…

A common thing for us as humans to do is think “what if?” I tend to think of all the options of how my life could have been and how it would’ve affected me as a person, if things were a little different. My dad worked as a window installer which caused him to constantly fly around the state and because of this it was just my mom and I for the first 5 years of my life. A Diverse World Who remembers being in class and the teacher saying, “find a partner” or “get in a group of four to five people” many kids would be exited because they would get to work with their friends, but there would always be one kid who could not find a partner. In today’s society we tend to gravitate towards those people who we look up to. At times we even start acting like them, by doing so, we do not take the opportunity to get to know other people who could be considered: nerdy, loser, ugly, or other characteristics we view as negative because it may be different than what we are used to. By teaching diversity and emphasizing it we would be able to break up cliques, give students the opportunity to get to know all of their classmates better, it would decrease bullying rates; which also ties into depression, anxiety, and low self esteem, and hate crimes.…

Diversity is an important tenet in today’s globalized world; one faces diversity almost every day so it is important for people to have a wide understanding of what diversity is and how diversity can be beneficial to both society and individuals. An international student teaching internship would greatly enhance my knowledge of diversity allowing me to have more success as a future educator and a citizen. Going on an international internship would expose me to the very definition of diversity; I will be placed in country I have never been to and I will experience customs that I’ve never experienced before. Putting me in England will force me to confront new situations and different outlooks on the world that will open my mind to many new ideas and concepts that I may never get to experience without the internship. These new experiences with diversity will allow me to open my mind more to the human experience in general, while also making it easier for me to understand the views of people all around the world, specifically those in Europe.…

For this assignment, I chose four different cultural groups that have a decent amount of significance in my life currently that are in a sequential order from when they happened. They include: being born and developed into an African-American woman, becoming an older sibling, being considered as a young adult (from the ages of 18-24 years old), and lastly, becoming a child care professional. The one primary cultural group that I am highly affiliated with at the moment is being considered as a young adult; I am currently 22 years of age. I chose this cultural grouping because it would still apply to my life with me being a child care professional, an African-American woman, or being the older sibling regardless to if I am 22, 23, or 24. I also…
