Her response was “I think a lot of my peers understood my background and race because majority of us had the same background. I wish I would’ve taken the time to get to know students who were of other religions and races. Being at a school that was mostly all the same I never took the time to reach out and learn or talk to people of other backgrounds. I think now it would be interesting to hear their stories about how they grew up because I know it would’ve been something different from mine.”
I asked her if she had friends that where different race/ ethnicity? Her response was “I did have friends that were of different races and ethnicities but I met them outside of school or at other social events. I had friends that were white, African American, Hispanic and it never was a problem. We would all hang out and we never thought about the fact that we were all from different backgrounds. I went to a public school and it was very diverse but being a African American I have faced a lot of stereotypes and have been treated differently by peers and teachers. Majority of my friends are a different race from me. I feel that it is important for people to develop a relationship with someone outside of their race. Understanding the importance of diversity will make the educational community stronger. They can use people stories to learn and grow from them and could relate back to them in every day life. For an example if they are put in a situation that involves diversity they can look back at other people stories to know how to react. They should put their selves in other people shoes and treat the situation how they want to be treated. They can also use people stories to inspire other people who are going through the same
