Each individual student has a different background and should be able to feel comfortable in and out of the classroom. My goal as a future teacher is not only to come up with different strategies to encourage equality but create a safe-zone for my students. All students deserve a great education and the best way to help them achieve it is for them to embrace their own and others uniqueness. I want to provide an environment that students can feel respected and can be successful. To understand diversity, you must look at others educational personal experience. Her response was “I think a lot of my peers understood my background and race because majority of us had the same background. I wish I would’ve taken the time to get to know students who were of other religions and races. Being at a school that was mostly all the same I never took the time to reach out and learn or talk to people of other backgrounds. I think now it would be interesting to hear their stories about how they grew up because I know it would’ve been something different from mine.”
I asked her if she had friends that where different race/ ethnicity? Her response was “I did have friends that were of different races and ethnicities but I met them outside of school or at other social events. I had friends that were white, African American, Hispanic and it never was a problem. We would all hang out and we never thought about the fact that we were all from different backgrounds. Majority of my friends are a different race from me. I feel that it is important for people to develop a relationship with someone outside of their race. Understanding the importance of diversity will make the educational community stronger. They can use people stories to learn and grow from them and could relate back to them in every day life. For an example if they are put in a situation that involves diversity they can look back at other people stories to know how to react. As a child raised in a predominantly African-American neighborhood, my initial encounter with people from other backgrounds occurred when the school district started bussing kids across the city to largely populated white schools. While this experience took us out of our neighborhood schools, it provided an opportunity to meet students from other races, ethnicities, and religions which were different from me. Interacting with kids from various backgrounds helped me to be more open to different perspectives and not to prejudge. Additionally, the church I grew up in was very strict.…

A Diverse World Who remembers being in class and the teacher saying, “find a partner” or “get in a group of four to five people” many kids would be exited because they would get to work with their friends, but there would always be one kid who could not find a partner. In today’s society we tend to gravitate towards those people who we look up to. At times we even start acting like them, by doing so, we do not take the opportunity to get to know other people who could be considered: nerdy, loser, ugly, or other characteristics we view as negative because it may be different than what we are used to. By teaching diversity and emphasizing it we would be able to break up cliques, give students the opportunity to get to know all of their classmates better, it would decrease bullying rates; which also ties into depression, anxiety, and low self esteem, and hate crimes.…
