Maya Angelou: Diversity In The Classroom

Like Maya Angelou, I firmly believe that “It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” While Angelou was not only talking about diversity in the classroom, this quote aligns well with my beliefs about diversity in the classroom. I believe that as a teacher, I must do as much as possible to help the increasingly diverse learners in my classroom be successful. I believe that diversity isn’t an “issue” to be handled in the classroom, but an incredible learning opportunity. Because of this belief, I interpret Angelou’s quote as saying it is a teacher’s responsibility in the classroom to teach students that diversity is truly a strength and should be used to its fullest potential, …show more content…
I believe that diversity is a learning opportunity and an asset for all students. For example, in my Instructional Design and Assessment practicum many students were bilingual, meaning that they spoke both English and Spanish. It was incredibly valuable for those bilingual students to be able to talk to each other and explain their thinking in their native language first before sharing with the class in English. During my student teaching experience, students came from many different familial, educational, and cultural backgrounds. Students benefited from sharing their differing perspectives with one another to gain a deeper understanding of the diverse world around them. For example in my student teaching experience we were reading aloud a book that included a parent going back to school at night. One student connected to this experience and shared her ideas and memories about when her mother was going to college at night. Diversity could also be found in interpretation of activities in my student teaching experience. The first graders benefited from hearing different perspectives on things like math problems and reading passages because it showed that there was no one right answer or way to learn. It is my personal goal to show students that there is no one right perspective or way of finding an answer in my classroom and to help students see the incredible value in their own as well as their classmates’

It is the responsibility of Educators to teach children about diversity to prevent discrimination, cause till now they have been introduced to the culture, values and traditions of their own family. - In small groups I would make conversations with children about diversity and encourage children to have their say and opinions, be open to discussions about the way they feel, share within the group, things they have seen, heard or experienced. - Read books to the children about being respectful of each other’s differences and arrange small group activities on what they have learnt and understood from the book. - Organise excursions where children will be able explore and be introduced to different cultures and experience this for themselves.…

Fall of 2013 I started the Early College Alliance, otherwise known as ECA. For those who do not know, when you first start ECA you take High School level classes, with other High Schoolers during your first semester. After teachers review your progress you’ll either be placed in College classes, because you’re what they call, “College Ready,” or you’ll take another semester of High School classes. During my second year of ECA, I was placed in EMU College classes. During this time I was exposed to an environment in which I was interacting with adults in a classroom setting, versus being in school with students in my age group.…

The reading by Kluth (2010) about the role of the teacher highlights the importance of an inclusive and non-discriminatory learning environment, which are contributing factors to a supportive and positive learning environment. The reading discusses the importance of recognising diversity. “Recognising, however, and doing our best to really understand how differences affect students ' lives and educational experiences, helps us to better know and serve each individual learner.” (Kluth, 2010, p.44). If the students in the classroom community are able to understand each other and how everyone comes from a different background and recognise diversity then it will help to preserve student dignity, which is another factor which Kluth (2010) states as important.…

Diversity and inclusion in education is an ongoing issue that, as teachers, we will need to be constantly aware of. To be aware of the diverse students in the classroom, whether that be their various cultural and religious beliefs or simply their learning styles as well as being welcoming and accepting of these differences and adapting teaching methods to ensure their success in school means that we are, hopefully, getting the most potential out of the students we are teaching. There is a correlation between diversity in an educational context and Human Rights and Social Justice in the wider world. Simply, diversity relates to Human Rights and Social Justice in education because as the Australian Human Rights Commission states Human Rights…
