“Psychopathic individuals are typically described as being skillful manipulators categorized by interpersonal traits such as a being superficially charming, being manipulative, and having the tendency to lie pathologically”(Dobrow) states Hare, Forth, and Heart in The Relationship between Psychopathic Personality Traits and Lying. Within In Cold Blood, Dick is presented having a majority of the traits seen in past maniacs. Meanwhile, Perry simply has mental issues, and can be easily manipulated by Dick. That is to say, Dick clearly resembles the perfect psychopath because of his his lack of empathy, his head injury, and his pathological lying.

Although it is obvious that the two performed a crime at the Clutter home, Dick continues to lie. It is explained that “Hickock himself, he says he wouldn’t hurt the fleas on a dog”, which is Dick continuing to lie to the detectives even though they are at the end of their journey. Although the two have been caught, Dick persists and continues to not tell the truth to the investigators. It is stated in The Relationship between Psychopathic Personality Traits and Lying that “individuals with higher levels of Antagonism and/or Disinhibition lie more frequently and to more people than other individuals”(Dobrow), which backs up the fact that Dick is more of a psychopath due to his hostile actions. With the factual evidence that hostile people develop a tendency to lie often, the readers can reasonably assume that Dick is a malicious liar. But this is not the only trait that makes up the perfect murderer, because Dick also had his head injury and he lacks
