Human anatomy and physiology is the study of the structure and function of the human body. When a disease strikes a part of your body, it ultimately affects the majority of your body system. There are thousands of diseases that can affect your body immensely. The various diseases, such as diabetes, can sometimes be life threatening.
Diabetes is a serious life-long disease that affects the lives of many men, women, and children. If you are overweight, have a family history of diabetes, or not physically active, you can be at risk for diabetes. Diabetes or diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder caused by high levels of glucose in the blood. The three types are Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes. Typically, Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed in children and young adults and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Approximately 5% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. In Type 1 Diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Type 2 Diabetes or hyperglycemia is the most common form of diabetes. This occurs when the body does not properly use insulin. Gestational diabetes is common among pregnant women during their second trimester of pregnancy. However, diabetes requires a huge commitment. It is not something that a person should be careless about. Each type of diabetes is different and similar in its own way; therefore, treatments differ from each type. The main factor for treatments for all types of diabetes is to help the patient live a healthy life. The types of medications you have are oral and injected medications. Insulin injections can help Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. For Type 1, insulin injections help them control the blood sugar. When oral medications are no longer helping type 2, they eventually need to take insulin by injection. Gestational diabetes typically disappears after birth. Even though these medications cannot cure diabetes, they help the patient take back control of their lives. A person with diabetes has to sustain a healthy lifestyle by eating the right food, exercising, and controlling the blood sugar level. Adding plenty of fiber to your diet can improve your blood sugar levels, which is key to preventing diabetes. In addition, it can also help you feel full faster, so you will likely lose a little weight when you fill up on fiber. According to the American Diabetes Association, an estimated 29.1 million Americans had diabetes in 2012. That is approximately 9.3% of the American population.
