The prolonged emotional state that colors many, if not all aspects of a person’s thoughts and behavior can be classified as mood disorders (Grey & Bjorklund, 2014). According to the DSM-5 manual mood disorders are broken down into two main categories. One is called depressive disorders and one is called bipolar disorders. The frontal cortex had a seven percent volume decrease linked to major depression (Sheline, 2003). Other abnormalities in the frontal cortex include cortical thickness decrease and a loss of glial cells. This study show the neuronal size decrease also (Sheline, 2003). According to Sheline (2003) all control subjects showed a significant difference in the frontal cortex. Another brain area that is affected by the depression is called the basal ganglia. Like most of the other brain area mentioned, the volume in the basal ganglia is decreased as well. This decrease is found especially in the one that has been diagnosed with depression for years. (Sheline, 2003). If a depressed individual was overall healthy besides their depression disorder, studies could not find or report any difference in the caudate or putamen. According to Sheline (2003) gray matter tends to be diffused in the basal ganglia as well. The basal ganglia is said to have enlarged ventricles as well (Sheline, …show more content…
Also, I have discussed what types of abnormalities occur in each brain area or region. This paper concluded that one needs to maintain a healthy lifestyle to avoid any type of depression. This is true to support the fact that depression alters many brain areas they do not need to be altered. Altering or having abnormalities to certain brain areas can be harmful to the human body in general. More research on this topic will help individuals become more familiar with the brain areas that are altered. Also, it will be effective in encouraging one to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to beat depression or any symptoms related to
