One way Doyle characterizes Holmes is by using Watson's tone. When Watson discovers Holmes ignorance about the Solar System, Holmes says “I consider a man’s brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose” (Doyle, Page 2). The reader can infer that Holmes learns what he wishes to learn. The quote is telling the reader that Holmes learns what he will benefit from and what he find useful in his life. The Quote is telling the reader and Watson why Holmes hasn’t memorized the Solar System. Doyle wants the reader to know that Holem is good at what he does because he learns the things he want’s to learn.
In the same conversation with Watson, Holmes also says “ depend upon it comes a time when every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the good ones” (Doyle, Page 2). The reader can Infer that Holmes doesn't memorize facts he finds useless. Holmes will not forget the information he learns because his head is clear. This also is another reason why he doesn't remember simple facts. The Author wants the reader to know that Holmes is an intelligent person, but in his own way.
