Aging Barriers In Communication Essay

Aging is a natural occurrence as well as the normal changes that come with it; for example, changes in communication. In older adults, normal changes associated with aging can cause newfound communication issues. Nurses should be well aware of the common communication issues that are associated with the elderly population so that they may be able to work effectively. This paper will examine some of the barriers to communication commonly associated with the elderly such as hearing and vision loss, effects of medication, and neurological damages. In addition to identifying the barriers this paper will detail ways to break past them. The most common communication barrier that effects the elderly is hearing loss. Presbycusis is the medical term for hearing loss that occurs in older people as they age. It is the most common cause for hearing loss in people aged over 55. The severity can vary greatly from person to person, with high-pitched, high-frequency sounds that are affected. There are several reasons why communication become less effective with older people, but most of them are due to their reduced hearing capacity or inability to express their thoughts clearly. Since communication involves a clear exchange of information involving two parties, a gap exists when one of either parties fail to function.
