Colorism is the discrimination against people with different skin tones, usually having the same race or ethnic group. Colorism usually is disadvantage for dark-skinned people, but a privilege to those with lighter skin. The practice of colorism has been practice through many generations! Many believe that colorism began with slavery, because many light-skinned slaves were offspring’s of the slave owner, they were often favored more than the slaves with darker skin were. With favoritism on their side, slaves with fair skin often had many more privileges. This made light skin seem like the superior tone on many plantains. Leaving a nasty mark through many generations.
Colorism’s nasty mark on society has been link to things like; low marriage rates, long prison sentences and little to no job opportunities for dark-skinned people. With Dark skin being labeled as “Ugly”, it is no surprise that many people of color cannot find a spouse or significant other. The study examined the records of more than 12,000 women North Carolina prisons it showed that Light-skinned inmates are sentence to 12 percent less time than darker-skinned inmates are, and served an average of 11 percent less time in jail.
