Taleb Rifai, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Secretary-General, has declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Rifai has confidence that this has the ability to help promote the sustainability of tourism, whilst still reaching their economic goals. Rifai has spoken out, stating that climate change along with effective resource management, are increasingly important for tourism development, due to the increase climate change, that is immensely affecting tourism (UN New Centre, 2016). This essay illustrates the importance of the tourism industry addressing the increasing issue of climate change as it could result in tourism, as well as, the natural resources diminishing, through the direct impacts of climate change on tourism, how tourism affects climate change, as well as illustrating the utilisation of last chance tourism to educate tourists on the dangers of climate change.
