How Does Christmas Lost Its Meaning

Improved Essays
Christmas has lost its meaning due to certain things that have been added over the years. This is a very important question because there is an argument going on, debating whether Christmas has or has not lost its meaning. Over the years, Christmas has really changed. It used to be the celebration of the birth of Jesus, but it’s become commercial and most people rarely pay attention to the real meaning. Christmas has become very different over the years, and it gains a little difference every year. In the passage, “10 Ways to Celebrate Christmas like Our Grandparents”, it shows that it’s nothing like it used to be. It shows we’ve changed from what our grandparents did and that some people just might want to see how it used to be celebrated. In the passage, it says, “If you're weary of over-the-top consumerism and crowded shopping malls, step back to a simpler time.” This means we’ve gone over the top and are getting too commercial. Also, it says in the same passage, “Having an old-fashioned holiday season centers on choosing what really matters to you.” This shows that we do what everyone else wants and what matters to …show more content…
It used to be much different. It didn’t used to be as commercial as it is now. It says in the passage, “Commercialism Only Adds to Joy of the Holidays” by Onkar Ghate, that “it was a pagan celebration of the winter solstice”. That means that it more than likely didn’t contain much commercialism. Christmas has become a material holiday to most, since most people are asking for gifts, instead of spreading goodwill. It says in “What Americans Spend On Christmas” by Andrew Shen, that people are spending WAY too much on material items, such as gifts, Christmas treats, and even wrapping paper! It says, “Shoppers plan to an average of $704.14 on gifts and seasonal items this year.” This comes to show that people spend WAY too much on Christmas

Dickens novella, “A Christmas Carol”, continues to influence many aspects of Christmas that are celebrated today, such as family gatherings, seasonal food and drink, a spirit of generosity and a humanitarian focus of generosity of those less fortunate during this holiday season. It is the diverse views of the spirit of generosity and humanitarian focus that Dickens seeks to expose in this literary work. The landscapes of the novella shift between the poverty stricken, sick and imprisoned to the higher classes whose enjoyment of the season is enriched by wealth, to the embittered character of Scrooge whose view is one of a day of waste. Dickens uses both outdoor and indoor landscape to create the character of Bob Cratchit by contrasting his dominated servant attitude while in service to Scrooge versus his openly loving father/husband role within the Cratchit family.…

A Psychoanalytical Approach to “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” Christmas is a time of celebration, joy, generous offerings, spending time with loved ones, and most importantly, coming together as a community. For the most part, everyone loves Christmas; except for the Grinch. In Dr.Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the Grinch is portrayed as a bitter, vengeful, old man who hates the entirety of the Christmas season. His indignant attitude is especially evident when he overlooks the Whos down in Whoville during the holidays: “he stood there on Christmas Eve, hating the Whos, staring down from his cave with a sour, grinchy frown, at the warm lighted windows below in their town” (Suess, 10-12).…

In response to the overall feelings of negativity and glumness in the country, the Lakeland Times presented an article in November of 2011 that encouraged an earlier celebrating of the Christmas spirit. In the article “Let the decorations begin, bring on the holiday” The Lakeland Times ineffectively introduces a call for the Christmas spirit by encouraging individuals to decorate for the holiday early. This appeal ineffectively uses several points creating an article full of generalizations rather than actual evidence including, the glumness brought by a struggling economy, too much focus on politics, the need for unity within the country, commercialization and how it is not affected early decorating, as well as how early decorating shows…

Christmas, an important and happy holiday, now used mostly to gain large amounts of money. Retail businesses make it readily apparent that Christmas has become too commercialized when stores start putting out Christmas decorations in October. Retailers are more concerned with ensuring that people spend money and generate their revenue throughout the season. Instead, of promoting family time and being grateful for what we have, it 's about receiving and giving the best gifts money can buy.…

Someone is standing in line at a department store, waiting for their turn to pay for their purchases. It is mid-December and the weather is cold and snowy and people are bustling about trying to complete their Christmas shopping. The person who is at the cash register checking the customers out seems to be in the Christmas spirit telling the shoppers to have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year as they finish paying and head toward the front doors to leave. This would usually bring a smile to the face of the person on the receiving end, but as of late, this once joyful sentiment is now offensive. What's Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having every item in 'em through a round dozen of months presented dead against you? If I could work my will," said Scrooge indignantly, "every idiot who goes about with 'Merry Christmas' on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!" (page 4, stave one). This shows how Scrooge talks about Christmas traditions and the joy it places in people, and how he has reverted it so that he can express his own feelings toward this holiday.…

Scrooge is startled when three spirits; Spirit of Christmas Past, Spirit of Christmas Present, and Spirit of Christmas Yet to Come, came and tried to make him a better person. The spirits advised Scrooge to change little by little, but the third spirit impacted his progress the most in transformation.…
