[Since the creation of the written language, people have censored books.] Whether it be the burning of libraries, religious leaders creating laws, or organizations banning books based on sexual content or violence (i.e., Stephen King), people have tried to take away our freedoms of speech and press. Some see censorship as a help for people. But others think of it as a hinder to our freedom as well as our creativity. The problem with censorship is, that is is a harmful detriment to our society. Censorship at any age creates deviance. Chinese novelist MO Yan stated “I have always been independent. When someone forces me to do something I don’t do it.” This can work both ways. If someone says that you should not do something it is only human nature to try and defy that. This can be proven through the saying “Don’t look down.” It creates an almost instant reaction of temptation to look down. Deviance makes us human. If a person like Stephen King wishes to create a mystery novel that intensifies as the novel continues he has the right to. Stephen King is one of the most controversial authors and most of his books have been banned or close to being banned.
