How Does Cather Admire Antonia

Improved Essays
Cather seems to admire Antonia as a person because she is like a girl who grew up with Cather during her childhood. Cather admired her so much that Antonia’s qualities are largely based off of that girl. Antonia exhibits traits such as the great desire to be independent from others and what she wants to do. This independence, sometimes forces her hand into doing something she wouldn’t usually do, if it meant she was able to keep her independent nature. Being independent from others while still having a strong motivation to keep that feeling no matter what, is a quality that Cather strongly admires in a person.

Throughout the first reading assignment for My Ántonia Willa Cather uses vivid imagery to accentuate Jim Burden’s journey. The first signs of imagery are noted in the introduction where an unknown narrator describes the Nebraskan fields as “never-ending miles of ripe wheat.” There, under the “burning summers when the world lies green and billowy beneath a brilliant sky,” Burden’s childhood rears his love for the great country and he soon begins “to lose himself in those big Western dreams.” He later becomes a lawyer for the railroads, retaining his “fresh color and sandy hair and quick-changing eyes.” The imagery is carried through into the first four sections of the first book.…

Although many believe Ultima was a doer of things evil, it’s important to see the good in the way she teaches Antonio to go through life, protecting others in the form of the owl, and through her work as a curandera. Ernest Hemmingway once said “When writing a novel, a writer should create living people; people not characters. A character is a caricature.” This quote to me exemplifies the importance for an author to create lifelike characters that are not static and are instead dynamic, moving, changing. In Rick Bass’s short story Antlers all three of the main characters can be seen as almost living people who share a genuine connection between their environment and between each other. Bass shows the connection that the three main characters have through their characterization.…

In the time period that John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi was written, women had absolutely no sexual agency. Divided into categories of Madonna or Whore, women had impossible expectations to live up to. While marriage is the one institution in which it is socially acceptable for a woman to be sexual, the play subverts this. That Webster has the Duchess’ brothers the Cardinal and Antonio’s critique her for remarrying makes the categories of Madonna and Whore indistinct, thus demonstrating policing woman’s sexuality is useless.…

    Giovanni's Annabella

The protagonist of the play is completely subjective, in one aspect it’s Giovanni- the boy who struggles internally with his religious and moral obligations, and eventually kills his lover- but on the other hand, it’s Annabella whose journey can be summarized by her ultimate punishment for lust: death. In Giovanni’s case, his strength (though it quite literally causes his downfall) is his perseverance. His determination is what caused him to find a way for him to be with his sister, gave him the strength to then end her life, and afterwards face her husband.…

Matilda’s dark nature is evident when contrasted to Antonia, who represents the Beautiful. The Beautiful encompasses the passion of love, and appearance of ‘delicacy, and even of fragility’. Antonia’s limbs, so ‘white, so soft, so delicate!’ and her ‘lips fraught with inexhaustible sweetness’ fit her characterisation as the Beautiful in The Monk (p.294). From this contrast between Matilda and Antonia, Matilda’s nature as a Dark Hero becomes abundantly…

The Dualities of “The Duchess of Malfi” Throughout Webster ’s play “The Duchess of Malfi”, there is an ever present theme of duality that pervades through the story. Instances of characters being depicted as either animals or insects, imagery of poisoned and pure water, and the depiction of characters being each other’s twin both figuratively and literally, are constant. However, this is not simply story building by Webster. One could argue that the symbolism of all of these actions helps to make each of the characters slightly more homogenized to the others, but in fact, it does the complete opposite.…
