How Does Bullying Cause Suicide

Improved Essays
Cyberbullying is a major cause of teen deaths or suicide just as well as traditional bullying in other words physically bullying. You should be able to tell when looking at someone who is a victim of bullying such as the adolescent suddenly stops using the computer, becomes irritated or depressed after using the computer, avoids discussion about his or her computer/phone use, gets nervous when he/she receives a message or e-mail, or is reluctant to go to school. Some teachers and parents don’t really pay attention to it until it’s too late or the teen/child has attempted to commit suicide or anything because it has gone on for so long. “Traditional bullying and Cyberbullying are similar in that each involves a relationship between bully …show more content…
Also “bullies who were victims were 14.5 times more likely to develop a panic disorder in adulthood when compared to those with no experience of bullying and 4.8 times more likely to experience depression.” When bullies are bullying they don’t really think about the problems it could cause to the victim that can affect them for the rest of their life. Bullying leads to people ending up killing themselves and some of the consequences I think should take place is jail time or even a major fine. Because causing someone to kill themselves is basically like committing a murder because you pushed them to do that and it’s not fair that you just get let off with a fine jail time or worse is necessary. Most bullies think that just because they are kids that they won’t get in trouble or won’t have any consequences so they think that it’s okay. When the same thing would happen if you were a teen 16 and up. I’m against bullying it just isn’t right but it shouldn’t be to anyone, some people think that its not a big deal when it is or until one of their children are the victim of bullying who cares if they don’t have something you do or aren’t able to buy the newer or the nice name brand clothes

Over all, bullying is increasing and so is the amount of suicide among teens. Kathy Shaidle’s article “In Defense of Bullying” states that bullying is good on the development of youth to strive for more. That not many adolescence kill themselves due to bullying and anti-bullying actually is just creating more bullies. This outlook on bullying is ignoring that there has been a massive increase in self-harm amongst teenagers, why teens have been resorting to self-harm, how bullying actually affects lives, and how suicide and depression have become more widespread among adolescence. The article by Kathy supports no evidence that there aren’t that many suicides because of bullying and that bullying does not pose a massive problem for the well-being of youth.…

By opening conversation about a topic like bullying you're more likely to gain results than just by locking up the bullies. Though bullying shouldn't go unpunished, there are definitely better ways to go around punishing the guilty to gain the desired results. In Toppo’s article he states “An opinion poll conducted in February 2010, weeks after Phoebe’s death, found that 61% of Massachusetts voters said school bullying should be a crime.” This poll was taken after the suicide of a young girl from South Hadley, Massachusetts. Beyond the bias behind the survey, the outlawing of bullying based off of a death doesn’t seem very…

We also tend to neglect the fact of the matter of bullying that is all around us. Adam Krieger wrote in his suicide note, “…I don’t expect an apology for the false sympathies of people like Mrs. Dunfee, and the broken promises of others like Mr. Richman.” (Nicole). Unfortunately, this statement shows us the ignorance of our own adults, and leaders in our children’s life, not even showing us the ability to provide safety and a sense of protection. Allowing students to bully others, and downplaying it as teasing not only enables bullies to continue to bully, but showing their victims that their safety is not…
