How Does Bruno Change Throughout The Boy In The Striped Pajamas

Out of all the characters in “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”, I feel Bruno is the most interesting character, because he is a young boy living through the second world war, and who I feel, is rather ignorant of the dangerous and horrific events that surround him. At the very beginning of the novel, Bruno is forced to leave Berlin and his three best friends, Martin, Daniel and Carl, when his father is promoted to commandment of ‘Out-with’. And upon settling into ‘Out-With’, Bruno soon develops a friendship with a Jewish boy working their, called Shmuel, that I believe, through their friendship, shows how innocent Bruno is, and the way in which he changes to a more understanding and aware person. Shortly after the two boys first meet, their friendship soon becomes close knit, and I feel Bruno grows very committed to the …show more content…
Although Bruno moderately understands what is going on, I feel he still believes Shmuel is as equal and ordinary as him, so continues to visit Shmuel frequently, but keeps his friendship a secret, even lying to his sister, Gretel, and telling her he has an imaginary friend. Through Bruno’s naive, interesting character I feel he shows us that despite Shmuel’s and his obvious differences, the two boys were both ordinary young boys, whose similarities overcome their differences, and let them build a close friendship together. By Bruno showing this, I feel the readers, like myself, are given an important lesson, teaching us that beneath it all, we are all human. No matter who you are or who you want to be, we all have our own difference’s and similarities, but these differences and similarities shouldn’t stop us from being who we are and separate us as people. I now feel that our differences and similarities are what make us unique and special, so we need to ignore the people in our world like Bruno’s father, and instead acknowledge the people like Bruno or Shmuel, embrace our and others individuality, and altogether, become better people at
