The definition of “Courage” from the Merriam-Webster dictionary is “The ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous”. There are a few characters in the novel who demonstrate courage. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee took place in Maycomb County, Alabama. Although this town is not real, the events that took place in the novel were very real, things like racism, sexism, and poverty still exist today too. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, courage was demonstrated by Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley.
In the novel, Mr. Atticus Finch demonstrated courage. He was the dad of Scout and Jem Finch. Atticus was very courageous because he took to the Tom Robinson case. This was courageous for Mr. Finch because Tom was an African American, and that was far from encouraged in Maycomb. Boo Radley was very courageous throughout the novel. He showed massive amounts of courage when he saved the Jem and Scout from being stabbed and killed by Bob Ewell. Not only did Mr. Radley show courage because he saved the children, but also because he came out of his house for the first time in a very long time - this displayed courage seeing that the reason he did not go out of his house was because he had stabbed his dad in the leg while he was younger - not knowing what could happen, he knew that he needed to rescue the Scout and Jem. The last reason I believe that he showed courage was because once he saved the children, he took Jem into the Finches home and laid him down on the bed. Courage was displayed here when Boo Radley went into the Finches house, he did not know how Atticus would react, if Atticus would blame him - because of Boo’s past - or if Atticus would be more relieved to see that Jem was not injured worse than he
