My choice to have biochemistry as my major was the most logical, because for all of my life I have been interested in what life is composed of. I looked at the incredible things that people and animals do and I found that all the intricate working of biology and chemistry that made all of their actions possible, only added to the awesomeness of it all. Another important factor in my life that started my interest into the science of biology was my mother, who has a genetic anemia called Fanconi Anemia. She has lived with this genetic disease for all of her life and it has had a toll on her quality of life. From my earliest memories she has struggled with blood transfusions and bone marrow biopsies.…
Cutting precisely on the lines, making sure I didn’t stray and accidently cut out part of an article, I carefully extracted the Sudoku puzzle from the daily newspaper before my father came to the breakfast table to read it. Then, working as fast as I could, I began deciphering the puzzle, eliminating numbers I knew didn’t belong in a certain box and writing, in tiny print, all the numbers that could potentially fit. Gradually, as the pieces came together, the completed puzzle unfolded. I glanced at the clock, scarfed down my cereal (which had gone soggy), and raced out the door just in time to catch the bus. During my hour long bus ride to school I would reflect on how I had solved the puzzle, wondering if there was a better way to approach…
I wanted to become a biomedical engineer in order to ease the surgical process.…
Beatrice Torres June 23, 2016 Breakthroughs: Biomedical Research Yishi Jin, a renowned researcher, developed a study called "Neural Development and Axon Regeneration in C. elegans". Her research revolved around axon regrowth and the restoration of mature neurons, problems that arise quite frequently as we, both, age and face unfathomable and unexpected accidents. She utilized C.elegans as the model organism due to the similarities evidently present between each of the nervous systems. Additionally, Jin examined the…
For this research paper I will be writing about my major, which is pre-nursing. Pre nursing is something that I’ve wanted to do for a while and is something that I’m really passionate about because I have always found it intriguing and interesting since I was young. It turned into a passion when I was in high school because that was when I really started to think of a serious career path. In high school taking a class in Anatomy and Physiology validated that choosing nursing as a career was the right choice. When I was younger, I remember watching medical shows on the Discovery Life Channel and being really interested in how the human body worked, for example how a person can get a heart attack and the processes the body goes through during…
After reading beyond humanity, I believe that biomedical enhancements should be permissible to anyone. Biomedical enhancement is perhaps most apparent in sport, where drugs have long been used to improve performance, but it is also widespread in other spheres (Douglas, 2008). Biomedical enhancement can be used to improve functioning of those that need it. Biomedical enhancements is a significant issue that has been debated for the past 20 or so years. In the text, Buchanan shows arguments for having these enhancements that show that enhancements will benefit people and our society as a whole.…
There I was, a young boy, waiting with my family in the hospital and the Surgical Assistant was taking care of my younger brother’s infected pre-auricular sinus. Ignorantly, I asked why he didn’t cut it open to relieve the pain quickly. The assistant replied, “That is the job of the surgeon.” I was fortunate enough to be allowed on to the surgical observation deck and was enthralled by what I saw.…
However, as I grew up I have demonstrated a strong understanding and interest fin math and science. As a began taking more math and science classes I realized that did not want to be like other girls and become a teacher, I wanted to be an engineer. I enjoyed the fact that I was able to think, strategize, and create solutions to solve problems. Whenever I am studying mathematics and the sciences, I was always in my comfort zone and passionate in learning more about these subjects. Many people ask me why engineering I tell them that not only was I passionate about mathematics and science at a young age…
My intended STEM major that I choose to study in college is biology. I choose to major in biology because I found it fun and interesting and also because it is something that I needed to have a good understanding of if I plan to have a career in the medical field. I wanted to major in biology because I enjoyed biology in my sophomore year and it was one of the few classes that I was excited about. Although it's going to be harder and more complex in college,it will interesting and a new experience to have a challenge in something that I enjoy learning.…
The scientific community has come very far and reached a point in scientific breakthroughs that cloning and bioengineering can help with the advancement in the quality of human life. This process of cloning and bioengineering will help the human race as a whole through the benefits and advancements that follow due to the outcomes of this practice. Cloning and bioengineering should be used due to the benefits in the medical field, the advancements in crop and animal yield, and gives the opportunity of reproduction to people who physically are unable to. Bioengineering and Cloning have made a huge impact on the thought of how scientists can and will be able to treat and cure a vast group of illnesses.…
The prospect of continuing research and broadening my knowledge of biomedical sciences excites me. The mammalian genetics Ph.D. program at the Sackler School in collaboration with The Jackson laboratory would best help me achieve my goals. While completing an undergraduate degree in cellular and molecular biology at the University of Rhode Island, I have worked in the laboratory of Dr. Niall Howlett investigating the biochemical properties of Fanconi anemia, an inherited bone marrow failure disorder resulting from a defect in a specific DNA repair pathway. I currently investigate the interplay between epigenetic markers and the localization of protein to chromatin in the presence of DNA damage.…
Introduction These are the models of health such as biomedical and meaning of health are models of health conceptual fame work or ways of thinking about health (the way we think or consider about it.) What is bio-medical? Biomedical model of illness and healing takes a look at the biomedical factors which are things you insert into your body.…
My keen desire is to do healthcare science at university, I am extremely fascinated and inquisitive with the life sciences and I enjoy problem solving. I am passionate about helping others and I believe a degree in healthcare science will enable me to do this and it will also offer me a wide range of opportunities such as cardiac physiology. I strongly believe that a degree in healthcare science will give me the understanding and skills to achieve my career ambitions.…
Genetic Engineering Throughout history, humans experience many changes whether it is good or bad. Some of these changes can bring issues into the world. One of these “issues” that humans know today is genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is one of the well known creations known to man kind.…
My desire to pursue a career in medicine initially bloomed out of an interest in Biology. I was fascinated with learning about the body’s mysteries and how it functions, so I entered college as a pre-medical student. During this time, I was able to experience volunteering in the medical field and my passion for medicine increased. My experiences have shown me that medicine is a strong fit for me.…
