The History Boys is a play written by Alan Bennett. Bennet uses comedy techniques through the play, to humour the audience. The French scene is farcical, it is highlighted as it is seen to be very subversive as we see the students; Rudge, Scripps, Dakin, Posner, Akhtar acting out a brothel scene with the permission of their general studies teacher Hector.
The beginning of the French scene is subversive as the teacher asks the students what they would like to do in the lesson suggesting that he has not planned the lesson showing the bad standard of teaching as he is unprepared. But a brothel where all the clients use the subjunctive or the conditional, yes? Here. Already a client! Who is the maid?” it is very inappropriate for a teacher to agree with the suggestion of acting out a brothel scene. This doesn’t link with the subject ‘general studies’ however this was normal in regards to the time it has been set in, 1980’s – 1984 was not a national curriculum during this time. Another interpretation of this is he didn’t want to play the prostitute. There is a one work sentence shows he was eager to play that role, this was followed by a short sentence which emphasises the normality of the scene.
“Enter, if you please. There is your bed and here is your prostitute.” They are acting calmly they are used to this happening and it’s very normal for teenagers to be acting out a brothel scene which is subversive for the audience
The scene is very surprising, we can infer this from POSNER who says “But your shoes, sir, not on the bed. And your pants, if you please.” This is could be seen as incongruity theory because it’s very subversive to find a student in school to tell another student to take their trousers of, you also would not expect the teacher to stand and
