Informatics- Guest Speaker (Journal) During the guest speaker, I truly enjoyed to learn about all of the advance technology that certain hospitals have available. The most important thing about this technology is that we can manage and communicate within health professionals to improve the health of individuals, populations and communities. Does BCMA improve client safety? The Bar- Coded Medication Administration (BCMA) improves client safety because it prevents medication errors in healthcare settings and improves the quality of medication administration. How many errors have you heard about that BCMA has prevented? This particular program has shown a decrease in medication errors by 65%-86% and 31% or 13,500 errors in the Pharmacy system. The EMR and the BCMA are more efficient.
How? The EMR speeds up the process of patient health records, they are readily available. Therefore, health care providers are able to see patient information with the click of a button. The BCMA prevents medication errors by following the 5 rights of medication administration. Therefore, Ultimately the main goal of this technology is to offer a safer, faster, and more reliable service to clients. In conclusion, this presentation was an eye opener about the importance of informatics in the health care system (for a minute, I felt as if I was in the movie “The Matrix”). Anyway, I am all about technology and preventative methods to maximize patient’s care and safety; however, the job of a nurse cannot be substituted because it is the nurse’s touch that gives the patients an incredible emotional and physical health (and this is proven). http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/hands_on_research. Now, I feel a bit concerned about those nurses out there who do their job like a machine because these ones can be easily replaced by technology. Overall, an amazing presentation to learned

Administering medications to patients is a daily task performed by almost all nurses. In the Bachelor of Nursing curriculum, the 7 rights and 3 checks of medication administration is taught, practiced and performed by all nursing students to ensure proper habits are developed. The problem occurs when health care providers are no longer under supervision of an instructor, and short cuts are acquired. These short cuts, although time saving, ultimately cause more complications for the patient and the health care system. As a group, we have found that CARNA’s Medication Administration Guideline (2016) is not being implemented or enforced as it should to prevent medication errors.…

The aim of this project is to investigate the effectiveness of implementing the BCMA system, which is known as the second most frequent technology that is implemented, based on clinical decision support (Seibert, Maddox, Flynn, & Williams, 2014). This project will study the effects of barcode medication administration error rates, compared to not using barcode medication administration systems. The stakeholder, such as the VA Outpatient clinic need clinical data to clearly identify the medication error rates, and compare data after implementing this system. According to Seibert, Maddox, Flynn, & Williams (2014), some of these errors are diverted before reaching the client (veteran). By using the BCMA, it has been proven that the “rate accuracy”…

    6) Caring is “displaying kindness and concern for others” , This relationship will look differently when applied to a traditional face to face encounter without technology, versus in a smart healthcare application in the IoT. Systems can’t care about people. The patient may complain (or possibly praise) a smart healthcare system if the system was a human and capable of caring. But, setting aside this artificial intelligence sense of caring in a system, how does one incorporate the caring quality into a smart healthcare system and measure that quality?. We might assume that technology will increase the caring distance. It is possible, however, that caring may be estimated higher in a smart versus non-smart equivalent healthcare system.…
