An investigation was launched to help define the ways parents control and show their love to their children. They came up with four categories, Authoritarian, Permissive, Authoritative and Neglect/ Abuse (pg. 149-150 in text). Here is how Baumrind depicts these styles.
Mr. and Mrs. McDonald parent using the Authoritarian style. This means that they set rules and guidelines and expect their children to follow them perfectly. They expect great things from their children. They also tend to spend a lot of energy and time making their family look perfect in the eyes of the public. This style has its ups and downs. The children, for the most part, know what to expect from their parents. They know that there is a concrete line of what is right and what is wrong. However, they each effect the person in a different ways. With alcohol (a common part of adult social life in America) a little bit does not affect the person drastically, it is also not addictive to most people. Alcoholism is a problem but as a percentage of people who consume alcohol it is not a very large number. Marijuana is addictive but easier to quit then other drugs. It is addictive because with every use more HTC is needed to reach the same ‘high’ as the one they last experienced. It is known as a gateway drug because the high needed may not be given with marijuana alone, something stronger is needed which opens the door to other drugs. Cocaine is very addictive and hard to quit. People who try to quit have to detox which cause withdrawal symptoms, sometimes these symptoms are so severe that the person has to give up and go back to the drug.
