It portrays the similarities and differences between street and commercial art. Banksy’s unusually intriguing pieces are known mainly for their rather controversial attributes, which is sort of his signature style. His pieces often contain hypocrisy, political themes, capitalism, and critiques of war. In the early 1990’s, his graffiti gang, DryBreadZ Crew, were recognized in the streets of Bristol. However, when Banksy began his (presumably) solo career, his fame seeped into London as well. Throughout the years of admiring his pieces, I have always been attached to a certain few. My favourite (school appropriate) of all, of course, is ‘Soldiers Painting Peace’. ‘Soldiers Painting Peace’ is an anti-war piece created by Banksy presumably around 2007. The piece was made with a stencil and painted on with spray paint. In the mural, Banksy had created the image of two soldiers; one is crouching with a gun at hand, and the other has a paintbrush and is looking around to make sure no one has seen him painting a large red peace sign on the wall. In between the two is paint can with a logo in the middle. The artwork is used with the colours red and black, and seems to lack almost every other element except for the texture of the dripping paint and the clothes of soldiers and also the human shape they possess. The piece also lacks in every principal except for proportion and movement. The soldiers are accurately portrayed in size and the painting gives off the implication that they are moving to paint and to keep watch. The most evident colour in the painting is red, most likely symbolizing the intense passion or hatred the soldiers might have about war.
