At the beginning of the story, Atticus shows his courage by taking a case that he knows will bring him public humiliation. This is the case where he is defending Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape. Atticus knows this is a case that he will not win, but he takes it anyway because he believes it is the right thing to do (Lee 100-101). Atticus demonstration of courage is similar to Rosa Parks’s courage when she refused to move on the bus. When Rosa Parks was told to move to the back of the bus she refused, but did not become violent, even when surrounded by an opposing force (Bredhoff et al). Atticus also defended Tom despite the danger he was putting himself into against the mob. This defiance to the threats of others in order to protect people’s rights is similar to the case of Malala. Malala was a girl in Pakistan who spoke out against the Taliban in order to protect the rights of girls who could not go to school. Similar to the mob Atticus goes against, the Taliban is an organized mob that achieves its goals through violence (“Malala”).
