How Does Atticus Finch Use Social Inequality In To Kill A Mockingbird

Decent Essays
Social inequality exists in Maycomb in many forms, the both racial and monetary. People of color are constantly worked against and discriminated by the society of Maycomb, such as in the case against Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape, where the people of Maycomb both openly discriminated against him by assuming him being guilty, and the discrimination of Atticus Finch and his family, due to his defense of the man. People of whom do not socialize often and are apparently different from the majority of Maycomb are also discriminated against, such as "Boo" Radley, whom does not partake in the common day-to-day activities as the rest of the town does, and therefore has negative rumors regarding him and his reasons for not being

We learn from the very beginning of To Kill a Mockingbird, that the small town of Maycomb has a definite social hierarchy. We realize that the African- Americans like Tom Robinson living within Maycomb, are at the very bottom, for no other reason but their skin colour and the misconception that black people are untrustworthy. A sense of belonging is conveyed in many different ways using various techniques throughout the novel. Unlike Jasper jones, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are actually respected by some people within Maycomb such as Atticus and Miss Maudie, not merely just because of convenience but for their opinions on equality and justice.…

This can often have severe impacts on the person's life and the way they interact with the world around them. In Harper Lee's novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Arthur “Boo” Radley and Tom Robinson are judged as well as mistreated due to the way society views them. Rumors have been spread about both of these men making their lives much worse. Since Tom Robinson is an African American, he is put into the lowest class possible and if something were to happen between a white and an African American, without doubt the African Americans are put into mind as the bad ones.…

The people of Maycomb are significantly affected by racism and prejudice. Although there are many examples of this present throughout the text, I will be highlighting three of them; the first one being the Tom Robinson’s case. Another example of this is the bullying Jem and Scout receive as a result of Atticus defending Tom Robinson in court. The last example I’m going to share is the town's disapproval of Mr. Dolphus Raymond’s interracial relationship. All of these examples support my thesis of racism and prejudice being extraordinarily present in maycomb.…

“Atticus has used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret court of men’s hearts, Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella opened her mouth and screamed” (Lee 245). Although Tom had done no wrong against Mayella, his skin color mattered more to the jury than his right to a fair trial. It became clear to Scout how Maycomb thinks of negroes contemptuously. They sit in their own section of the courthouse, and live in their own separate part of town among themselves and the Ewell’s.…

After Atticus is appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man, the people of Maycomb show prejudice towards him. Atticus wants to provide Tom Robinson with a proper defense. The townspeople disagree with this and do not think that a black person should be given a proper defense, but Atticus does not care because he does not believe in racism or prejudice, he believes in equal rights. Many of the townspeople will say very mean things about Atticus. Many people do not believe that Atticus should help Tom because he is a black man, they think that black people do not deserve to be tried, that they are automatically guilty.…
