How Does Scout Finch Show Courage

As stated by Atticus Finch in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is “when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Pg. 128) What Mr. Finch means is that courage has to do with perseverance when doing the right thing whether they win or lose. It can also mean sticking to what one believes is morally correct, even when other people go against him/her for their efforts. Courage comes in many forms, even in quiet conviction. Not every story has an act of bravery, but it appears that most of the memorable novels do. In To Kill a Mockingbird, there are many characters that show courage in even the smallest things. She fascinates all who meet her with her intelligent, yet innocent personality. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout shows her courageous heart without even being aware of it at times. When her father is confronted by a town mob at the prison, she detects that something is wrong, so she catches a glimpse a familiar face and tries to confront the man with a casual conversation. She speaks of the man’s son and how her family treats him so nicely. She even brings up legal matters and says, “Hey Mr. Cunningham. How’s your entailment getting’ along?”(Pg. 174) This causes the man to retreat along with the rest of his band. Late one night, there is another occurrence where Jem and Scout are being followed home by someone in the dark. The man attacks the children and breaks Jem’s arm. Jem screams in pain as the bloke tries to harm Scout, but is thrown to the ground by someone else. Scout immediately hollers for Jem, but receives no answer. In all of the chaos, this little girl had the courage and gallantry to search for her brother in the gloom knowing that someone was trying to abuse
